So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. Ephesians 2:19-21 While we thank God for the gift of Jesus Christ who is the cornerstone of our church, we also thank God for the apostles and prophets who built the foundation for who we are at Central Presbyterian Church. The work that they accomplished inspired the church throughout the years to care for each other. Their commitment to God led them to establish a community where lives were nurtured and changed. Their infectious faith attracted other people to embrace the way of Jesus Christ. For decades they prayed for their fellow human beings . . . they discovered new ways to serve their sisters and brothers in the church . . . and they were willing to reach out to the world in mission and ministry for the glory of God. As we begin our project to refurbish our sanctuary, we realize that we are doing something more than just improving the visible beauty of our worship space; we are continuing the apostolic tradition which began with the prophets and disciples, persevered through the saints who initially chartered the church at 9th and B Streets, and continued through the servants of the Lord who had a vision to relocate the church to a new site. Through our congregational effort, we are providing an environment where our fellow human beings can not only hear the Word of God, but we can also challenge the world to believe the message of Christ and follow the way He sets before us. We are improving the structure where our community of faith experiences the presence of God, so that we may promote the grace of our Lord in the world. Through our collective support, we are working to develop a place where all people can worship, learn, serve, and live in the fullness of discipleship in Jesus Christ. Indeed, Central Presbyterian Church is a place where Christians can enter the fellowship of God's people by baptism, read and hear the Word of God, receive new life and strength as we break bread together, and be sent back into the world as ambassadors of Christ. As a result, through our sanctuary renovations, not only are we improving the aesthetic quality of our worship space, but we are also contributing to God's kingdom, where God's love, compassion, justice, peace, and reconciliation are shared with all people. We are seeking to glorify the God who has walked with us through history and leads us into the future, and we are hoping to honor the God of life who desires that all people should experience the gift of abundant life. Therefore, as we share in this project, let us celebrate how everything we are called to do is to point to Christ and the new humanity He brings. Blessings, tom |
